Use the sidebar of the Storage pane to sort through items by category, see how much space is used, and quickly find documents, apps, books, movies, backups, and other files. Then delete what you no longer need.

• At some point, everyone encounters a file that just won't delete. The most common situation is a file that sits in the trash and refuses to be deleted, however many times you restart your mac. Here are 4 different methods for removing stubborn files, at least one of which is guaranteed to work.

If you can’t delete a file and you get an error about “File in Use”, then your file is used by another app. You should try to close the app that is using the file. And you can also quit all the running apps to make sure that the file is no more being used by any of the apps. You cannot delete a file if an application is using it! If your Mac is displaying the “file in use” error, you need to figure out which application has a hold over the file and close that application. If you only have a handful of applications open, this may be as simple as shuffling through the various application windows.

1. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click Storage, then click Manage.

2. Click a category in the sidebar:

   • Applications, Music, TV, Messages, and Books: These categories list files individually. To delete an item, select the file, then click Delete.
